In this installment of our Client Stories series, we catch up with content creation powerhouse Jane Cavanagh fromJane Cavanagh Flute School.

Imagine learning an instrument from the privacy of your home – but with a talented virtual teacher alongside to help you get better, faster! Jane Cavanagh has built a successful global business around just this concept. Her online business, Jane Cavanagh Flute School, attracts students from all over the world including the USA, Europe and Australia. It’s now so popular that Jane recently launched a signature online program: The Flute Academy.

Jane offers elite-level flute coaching for amateurs. Her students are everyday people who might not consider themselves artists or musicians, but use the flute as their creative outlet: a place where they can express themselves and feel free.

Jane started out small, with instructional videos on YouTube. As she amassed a following through word-of-mouth though, she realised there was an appetite in Australia and beyond for accessible flute tuition that actually got results. Her unique methodology uses tiny tweaks and adjustments to accelerate people’s progress in unexpected ways. It has resulted in students having an ‘aha’ moment over something they’ve been stuck on for years, or rediscovering their instrument’s power to help them cope with personal crises.

Because Jane was originally a sole trader teaching the flute IRL, she was more aware than most of having her legal and accounting matters properly set up. However, when it came to the specifics required for a growing online business that attracted global clients, she was less certain. Her teaching platform, Kajabi, only provided generic terms and conditions, and Jane suspected she needed something directly related to her work.

Jane found Checklist Legal through a friend, who touted Verity’s fun and down-to-earth approach (and her legal credentials, of course!) for all things contract related. Verity helped Jane develop her Terms & Conditions (where the refund policy is especially important) and her Privacy Policy (which is essential when collecting people’s data).

After an online chat, Verity developed the documents in Jane’s unique business tone of voice to cover all her requirements. Instead of simply emailing them back, Verity filmed a video that stepped Jane through the key elements of the documents, so she could interpret and use them more easily. For Jane, it was as personalised and effective as a one-on-one, in-person consultation.

Since rolling out Verity’s contracts, Jane has had minimal requests for refunds – because the quality of the communication means that people understand the unique product they’re purchasing. Today, she’s in the enviable position of having a successful business that is properly protected, a wonderful work-life balance, and a platform to help more people than ever before rediscover their love for the flute.
